Empowerment Pins
**This is a work in progress of a series of pins featuring strong female characters from various Historical Korean Dramas. The current characters available are Hwang Jin Joo from “Warrior Baek Dong Soo,” Ki Seung Nyang from “Empress Ki,” and Eun Soo from “Faith/The Great Doctor.” Additional characters will be available over the next 12-24 months.
As I was coming up with the concept for these pins, and collaborating with the Bluedevil on character designs, I was primarily interested in the American female demographic, as our commercial media is bombarded with images of feminine superficiality that are counterintuitive to everything we have fought for. However, as I took these out into the real world, in the craft faire scene, the Renaissance Faire Scene, it became apparent to me that everyone benefits from a strong female role model. Not a two dimensional character who kicks, punches, and screams trendy buzzwords, or reminds us every two seconds how wronged she is…No, a well written character who is genuinely smart, focused, and strong. Empress Dowager Cixi of Qing Dynasty China comes to mind, or perhaps Emperor Wu Zetian (a woman who insisted on being called Emperor instead of Empress, as she was after all performing Emperor duties). Or most appropriately, Queen Seondeok of the Silla Dynasty. A strong female role model can be a straight shooting business woman and group leader like Hwang Jin Joo from “Warrior Baek Dong Soo.” A healer/doctor/someone who has the magic to make anyone beautiful like Eun Soo from “Faith/The Great Doctor.” A strong, protective, and sometimes hated political figure, a Korean woman, an outsider who had to fight today’s American equivalent of Systemic Racism to become the primary Empress in Yuan Dynasty China during the 1300’s, like Empress Ki. (Who was in fact a real historical figure who did just that).
The pins in this particular collection are 1-1.25 inches in size, so they aren’t too big to get in the way on your clothes, and they make a tasteful, yet powerful statement. These are great to pin on your denim jacket, your hanbok jeogori, t-shirt, blouse, backpack, hand bag, purse, shinai bag, etc.
There is also an option available to order a pin of your choice with an “Empowered Women of the Sageuk” coloring book for $15.50.
