Seon Ho, played by Woo Do Hwan is a mixed blood, relative to Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty Standards. He’s 3/4 slave, 1/4 noble, and when his full noble brother dies, his father insists on bringing him into the noble side of his family in order to keep the power going. He is all about being the new king’s “sword,” which is someone who not only protects, but carries out violent acts on behalf of the king and takes the blame for it. He feels that by doing so, it will put him on equal footing with the rest of the nobility, instead of being regarded as a mutt who does not belong anywhere.
Hwi, played by Yang Se Jong, is the son of an executed swordsman. As a condition of his father’s execution, three generations of his family are condemned to low born peasant life, and he is not allowed to take the military exam in order to achieve high ranking political office. He ends up being forcibly drafted into the common military where his life really begins to change. He becomes an ally to Yi Bang Won, who has the goal of becoming the next king of the newly founded Joseon dynasty.
Yi Bang Won, played by Jang Hyuk, is the son of the new Joseon King, Yi Taejo. He is the fifth son, and the most talented son, however, he is overlooked for the position of Crown Prince. This does not bode well, and due to the cutthroat grab for power, he is pulling out any and all stops in order to get that spot on the throne.
Han Hui Jae is the rebellious daughter of a deceased gisaeng, ready to obtain more power in order to protect the ones she loves.
Seo Yeon is Hwi’s younger sister, whom Hwi is tenaciously fighting to protect.
